can you save playstation 1 games on a playstation 2 memory card

i have just been trying to save a playstation 1 game on a ps2 memory card on the ps2 console and it doesn't allow me to do so and i was wondering if it would be worth while buying a few ps1 memory cards but didn't know if they are compatible with ps2 consoles. if ps1 games are compatible with the ps2 then surely the memory cards should be also. anybody got any ideas?
